Girls Basketball: A Peek In On The Season

Courtnianna Brashear & Ashlyn Wells

Do you want to improve your techniques with basketball? You can find the solution to your problem with Jana Hughes, a PLTW teacher and basketball coach here at West Jessamine Middle School.  Hughes has been improving her coaching techniques for 12 years, and is now one of the most talented basketball coaches you will ever meet.

Hughes said that she loves her job because she gets to improve her learning from the girls on the team, and the girls get to learn from her. Hughes also said she wants this season to end strong and for the 6th grade team to win their tournament. The team is on a rigorous schedule, with game at least two times a week, and practice the other three days.

Hughes initially started coaching because she wanted to have a positive impact on the girls, as well as to help them become better individuals. Hughes loves to see the girls grow and learn. She is especially going to miss the 8th grade team, because they were the first team that she has coached at West since they were in 6th grade. But she is also excited to meet the new 6th graders because their future is bright.

Zoey Spencer, one of the players on the basketball team, really enjoys participating in the sport, and she says that she really like Hughes as a coach, because Hughes keeps them on the “Go, go go!”
This basketball season has been a success all around for girls at all grade levels, and Coach Hughes has led the way.
